Lynn Freeman Cowan (1888-1973) was a composer, singer, pianist and actor who also had a degree in civil engineering. This led to military service with the Corps of Engineers and the Overseas Motion Picture Service during the Second World War, when he was in his mid-fifties, for which he received the Legion of Merit.
Cowan worked in a vaudeville double act after graduating, and made his first comedy short for Fox in 1924. He acted in about ten shorts and seven or eight features, including Metro’s Student Tour.
Cowan’s songs were featured in The Great Gabbo (1929) and a handful of other pictures.
