Philip Joseph Christopher Aloysius Regan (1906-96) was working as a New York police officer when a radio producer heard him singing and hired him to perform on the Burns and Allen radio show, earning him the soubriquet ‘the Singing Cop’.
In the next round of Fantasy Career, Hollywood knocked on the door and he appeared in around thirty pictures between 1933 and 1950, including Dames (1934) and Sweet Rosie O’Grady (1943). He hosted a radio show and performed on television in the early 1950s, before leaving show business to work in property speculation.
This third career ended badly in 1973 when Regan was convicted of attempting to bribe a public official. He served a year in jail.
Phil Regan starred in MGM’s Student Tour in 1934 and, sixteen years later, played himself in Three Little Words.
