Dai Jung Tong (1905-68) was the child of immigrant parents and one of the more successful Chinese character actors of the 30s and 40s. Even so, his film appearances were sporadic, no more than twenty in almost thirty years.
Tang was credited for his first role in The Great Divide (1929), a western from First National, but generally uncredited thereafter, including for his second appearance, in MGM’s Student Tour. Almost half his pictures were made after the United States joined the Second World War, when he played Japanese soldiers several times. In Operation Burma (1945), he at least portrayed a Chinese officer.
Tang was also a technical consultant on several films set in China, including The Left Hand of God (1955).
In 1936, Tang was given the opportunity to star in and direct Sum Hun (1936), an American picture in Cantonese.
After retiring from acting, Tang became successful restaurateur in Los Angeles, and was described after his death as a community leader.
