Edward J LeSaint (1871-1940) was a stage actor who appeared several times on Broadway as well as working in stock companies. Hemade his first screen appearance, working on the East Coast, in 1911, when he was already forty. He nevertheless accumulated around 300 acting roles and directed about 60 features and shorts. Most of the latter were made in the late 1910s.
LeSaint only acted in a handful of silent films but his career began in earnest in 1931 with the first of many low-budget westerns; indeed, most of his pictures were low-budget programmers, in which he was frequently chosen to play authority figures, particularly judges and doctors.
Notable pictures featuring LeSaint include the Marx Brothers’ Horse Feathers (1932) and Union Pacific (1939).
LeSaint appeared in four MGM musicals: Student Tour, Reckless, back with the Marxes in A Day at the Races, and Honolulu.
