Dorothy Short

Dorothy Short (1915-63) secured a $50 a week contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer when she was eighteen. Some sources state that she made her debut as a show girl in Hollywood Party, though the AFI Catalogue stipulates it was as a student in Student Tour, so she was in either one or two MGM musicals.

Short spent most of career making low-budget westerns and, later on, Pete Smith shorts starring her husband, Dave O’Brien. She found a kind of immortality in 1938 when she appeared in Tell Your Children, an anti-drug exploitation picture that became a cult hit much later under the name Reefer Madness. The film was also where she met O’Brien.

Short retired in 1954 after divorcing O’Brien, and died sadly young from cirrhosis of the liver.
