Monte Blue

Gerard Montgomery Bluefeather (1887-1963) had undertaken a wide range of manual jobs before making his first screen appearances in 1915. It is claimed he had been a day labourer for D W Griffith when an appearance in The Birth of a Nation (1915) lead to roles in short pictures and then a supporting role in The Microscope Mystery (1916). A few years later he was prominent as Danton in Griffith’s Orphans of the Storm (1921).

In 1924, Blue starred in Lubitsch’s The Marriage Circle, and went on to well over 200 more feature film appearances. He starred again for Lubitsch in So This Is Paris (1928), and played the lead in White Shadows in the South Seas (1928), partly filmed on location in Tahiti. But, as the sound era progressed, Blue found himself restricted to supporting roles, and by the 1940s he was uncredited in most of his pictures. An exception was Key Largo (1948), where he portrayed the local sheriff.

Monte Blue made only one appearance in an MGM musical, as Jeff the rowing coach in Student Tour.
